Local Search in India .. Advancing to Map interface

We have witnessed various local search solution providers in India. Few successful stories are Jusdial, google local, etc. Few emerging players are burrp, asklaila, dwaar, onyomo, etc. Today, these providers are graduating into a new world.. the world of maps. Local search solutions on map interface is one of the excellent way to reach end users requirement. And, as usual, Google is not behind. After collecting numerous Point Of Interest (POI) in various cities of India, they have almost completed marking them on the map. Previously they were showing text view of local search results. But, now the face of google local is changed. Their map view on local search is magnificient and excellent enough to help users. No doubt, google is still leading far ahead from other local search service providers in India.

But, looking at near future, I am damn sure that more and more providers will land on the Map Interface for showing their local search resutls. I am waiting for Just Dial to incorporate map view in their search results.

Time is less, and scope is vast. Lets see who wins the battle of local search.

Just Dial .. lacking Last Mile Solution !

One of the best local search service I used in India. I have lived in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. For making any local search, I have used JustDial extensively. I was always amazed with their results via sms, and prompt replies. I always found JustDial as one of my local friend in the metros. Finding address of shopping places, hotels, etc were never been a problem for me. But, I faced a normal problem everytime. This was LAST MILE problem. I used to reach to the nearby place, but never reached to the exact location. Finding out the last mile was always a problem. I always need to ask someone standing on the street for reaching to the exact location. Lets see how Just Dial can solve this problem.

Challenging GIS work in India

GIS in India is really unique. The pace at which this country is developing imposes serious challenges to all the GIS Data providers as well as service providers. Lack of standards, and assumptions among various vendors enhances the scope of confusions and errors in the datasets.

The above case is true not only in metros but elsewhere too. Point and line features changes suddenly on hourly/daily/weekly basis. This causes data providers a hell of rework and resurvey for keeping their data updated. Also, the service providers, like Just Dial, Burrp, Onyomo, Ask Laila, etc faces many challenges in keeping their local search data updated.

In my blog, I will keep on writing about various Indian scenarios in GIS area which can help both Data and Service providers to excel in their fields.
